Curly hair, how do I care for my curls

Curly hair… Let’s start with some history…

When I was just a little curl…. eh girl…

Everybody who has curly hair knows that curls have a life of their own. You can try to tame it, but you will never succeed. I have tried for many years. When I was younger I was never satisfied with my hair. It was curly, but not enough. So when my hairdresser asked me if I wanted to try straight hair I said “yes”. I tried it a couple of times and I must say I did not really like it. All of a sudden my hair was very sophisticated and cleaned up. Also, when the wind blew through my hair I could feel every hair move separately. Very weird! And when a drop of water would fall on it… POOF, my hair would curl again. I used to know this girl who straightened her hair by using an iron and a cloth. Very dangerous – I tried it once and burned the skin in my neck- and it is not good for the hair. No, it was definitely not my thing. So I came to accept that I had curls. But I was never really happy with them as I did not have a full head of curls like Katja Schuurman. For the Dutch readers: Yes, I was aware she had hair extensions in that time.

Then I grew up!

About 6 years ago I changed my haircut dramatically. I was fed up with my long semi-curly hair and I cut it short with layers. Wow, that was a good change. I actually had volume and my curls looked nice. Gone were the bad hair days. Since then, I have been very pleased with my hair. My hair and I have a good understanding together. I now know that a good haircut is necessary (layers girls) and how to take care of it so that it will sit the way I want it. Well, most of the times. I still see my curly hair as a part of my body with a life of its own 🙂 This might sound very weird, but I think even my husband now understands what I mean when I say my hair has a life on its own. 🙂

Curly Hair Years

So, how do I take care of my curly hair

My hair is very thin and curly and with that type of hair you should not let your hair grow too long because then it will just hang flat on your head without volume (see my picture with long curly hair below and you will get the idea). So it is above my shoulders and layers do the magic trick. But ask your own hairdresser for advise before you start chopping off your hair 🙂
Then it is important how you treat it. My basis is the Curly Girl Principle, but I have adjusted it a little.

The Curly Girl Principle

The Curly Girl Principle explains everything about the different types of curls and how to handle these curls. What for example works for me, might not work for you because you might have a different type of curl. But there is a red line to follow:

  • Curly-Girl-HandbookMOISTURE! Make sure your hair is moisturised. Meaning, use a mild conditioner. And with mild I mean not too heavy, otherwise your curls will hang without grace. The conditioner moisturises your hair, and moisture will make your hair healthy, shiny, bouncy and maybe more important: not frizzy. Frizziness is caused by dryness. So when you hair has enough moist, the frizz is gone.
  • Do not use any shampoo, conditioner or hair styling products with parabens, silicones, sulphates, alcohol or perfume. “Clean” products like this are also known as “No Poo”.

Silicones are used by the cosmetic industry to make hair look more shiny. They do this by adding silicones in the products and those silicones create a layer around your hair. Your hair might look shiny, but due to the layer of silicons your hair is actually drying out. You can recognise silicones by looking at the ingredients list of your product. Any ingredient ending with –one is a silicone. There are some exceptions, so please see the following website were information on this topic can be found.

Sulphates, also known as SLS, are detergents that are harsh for your hair, but are for example needed to remove silicones from your hair. Sulphates is the ingredient that makes your shampoo foamy. Yes, it cleans, but it also is harsh for your hair. Look for a sulphate-free shampoo. Sulphates can be recognised when an ingredient in the ingredient list contains the word -sulphate. Also, look at this website for a more detailed list.

Other ingredients like alcohol and perfume dry out the hair  and can irritate the skin. Parabens is debatable. They are used to extent the expiration date of your product. Some say that parabens cause cancer.  However, researchers still disagree on this one.

Important note: before you start using No Poo products, you have to make sure you remove the silicons from your hair before you step over. So you need a shampoo with SLS but without silicons. The shampoo that I use for this is Citrus Mint Fresh Shampoo from Fructis. This shampoo also does not contain parabens.

Step by step

  1. I wash my hair with shampoo every 3 to 4 days. I use at least 2 different shampoos to alternate, as I do believe that your hair gets “immune” for a shampoo when you use it too much. At the moment I am using Dr. Organic Argan Oil Shampoo and Jessicurl Gentle Lather Shampoo.
  2. I always use conditioner. And to match the shampoos I use the Dr. Organic Argan Oil Conditioner and the Jessicurl Aloeba Daily Conditioner.  When I shower and do not wash my hair with shampoo, I always use conditioner. If you have hair that needs to be combed, then this is the moment to do this. Use a comb with big teeth while the conditioner is in your hair. This type of comb will make sure your hair does not get damaged and it will define the curls already.
  3. Grove KamAfter showering I hang forward with my head and go through my hair with my fingers when my hair is still soaking wet. So do not dry your hair yet! If your have already combed your hair during step 3, then just loosen up your hair gently.  Then I scrunch my hair carefully to scrunch the curls in my hair and to scrunch some of the water out. Just do it a little until your curls are defined. Then I take a walnut sized blob of Jessicurl Confident Coils Styling Solution (and this is the best styling product ever!) and I scrunch this in my hair, still hanging forward. Confident Coils moisturises your hair and makes sure you curly strings look healthy and stay together. It also makes sure there is no frizz. I really love this product! BTW, you can also use hair gel for this step. Make sure it has not silicones.
  4. Enviro-ClothNow comes the other important trick: dry your hair still hanging forward with a micro fiber towel. I have bought a big one in a shop that sells deterrent products for the house. If you do not have it at home or cannot find it, you can also use a clean t-shirt. By using the micro fiber towel you will soak up a lot of water from your hair in a gentle way. It will also make sure that the chance your hair will be come frizzy is small. So NEVER EVER use terry cloth on your hair as it will damage your hair and make you hair frizzy.
  5. After that I gently come up and I usually let my hair dry naturally. Yes, I am one of those women who go out on the street with wet hair! You can also use a hairdryer. Always use a diffuser and end your hair drying with cold air. By doing this, you will close the cuticles of your hair which will make sure your hair looks shiny and not frizzy. Make sure you only dry it for about 80% to keep the frizz away. So it still be a little bit damp.Curly Hair Damp 3 pics
  6. Now comes another important trick: DO NOT TOUCH YOUR HAIR UNTIL IT IS DRY! If you start touching it before, your hair will become frizzy. It is hard, but you will notice the difference.
  7. When your hair is dry, you will see you have thick curl. I you want, gently go trough your hair to loosen up the curls a bit.

Curly Hair 3 Dry pics 2

And that is seriously all I do with my hair. Because I let my hair dry naturally, it does not cost me any more time than usual. Because I do not want to set my hair with a hair gel (I want my hair to be nice and soft), my hair usually starts very curly and during the day it gets less curly. Around 12 my hair is exactly the way I want it till late in the evening.

Jessicurl

Jessicurl Confident CoilsIn this post you have seen that I use Jessicurl. This is a nice product range developed by Jess McGuinty for curly hair. The webshop is very interesting because you can check what type of curl you have and which products from Jessicurl are suitable for your hair. Also, there are many handy instruction videos. The products are very mild and are not tested on animals. They are all Curly Girl Principle proof. In the Netherlands the products can be ordered online. I have ordered my products with Krullen&Zo. I will do a full review of the products I have used in later article.

I hope you found this useful. For me it really opened my eyes and the procedure really works for my curly hair. I do advise to give yourself some time to try out what works best on your hair. And if you have any great tips, then leave them in the comments.

Nutriganics Kit from The Body Shop

Nutriganics Kit from The Body Shop

The Body Shop, I love The Body Shop. It is filled with beauty products that are not tested on animals. I – a major animal lover – appreciate that a lot! Therefore, I regularly buy products from The Body Shop and a while ago I bought this Nutriganics kit with 4 mini’s. I already had it for a couple of months, but I only tend to open up a new product when another one is empty, or when I really do not like the one I am using. I really liked the facial products I was using at the time I bought this, so it took a while before I actually tried it.

Nutriganics Kit

Nutriganics Line

SPOTTED YOUR FIRST LINES? THE NUTRIGANICS™ RANGE FIGHTS THE FIRST SIGNS OF AGEING. IT INCLUDES DAY AND NIGHT CREAMS, SERUM, EYE CARE AND MORE.

I have been intrigued by the Nutriganics line of The Body Shop as it is has no parabens, no silicons and 98% of the ingredients is of natural origin. I have been using the Drops of Youth, which is a lovely light serum. As I was very happy with the drops, I decided to buy this mini set in the hope I would be as happy with it as with the drops. I will do a review about the drops later in this blog.

Contents of the kit

The kit contains 5 items:

  1. Nutriganics™ Foaming Facial Wash 50 ml
  2. Nutriganics™ Refreshing Toner 60 ml
  3. Nutriganics™ Smoothing Day Cream 15 ml
  4. Nutriganics™ Smoothing Night Cream 15 ml
  5. Nutriganics™ Toiletry bag

Buying a kit like this is a very handy way of getting to know the line or to have a small set to take with you on holiday. For me, I took the benefit of taking it with me on holiday to get to know it.

The Nutriganics experience: my opinion

Nutriganics Foaming Facial Wash

To be honest, I am not a person who normally uses a foaming face wash. Normally I use the Purity face wash from Rituals which is nice and creamy and cleans the face very well. Anyway, about this face wash: Some of the ingredients promise a nice clear and moisturised face. The organic babassu oil helps smoothes and revitalise the skin. And the organic mallow flower and the organic sugar moisturise and soften the skin. The container has a handy head on it to distribute the foam properly. I am happy to see that The Body Shop chose to put a real head on the mini instead of choosing a cheaper option. But I guess that for this type of product, the foam, it is necessary.

Nutriganics Facial Foam

This face wash is not my thing. But to be honest, that is every foamy face wash. The substance is a white light foam that you put on your face. I thought it did not clean very well. But for me that is inherent with a foaming face wash. It does not really clean the skin like a more creamy or milky product. The smell of the facewash is okay. It has a very clean and organic smell. If you wonder how organic smells… Well, like this face wash 🙂

Nutriganics Refreshing Toner

I normally only use a toner in combination with a cleansing milk, but this kit does not contain a cleansing milk. I am very curious to find out if there are actually people who first use a foamy face wash and then the toner. For me it is the one or the other. Anyway, of course I tried it. Also this one I compared to my normal facial cleanser and it also did not clean as well. This toner also has the same babassu oil and mallow flower as the face wash. But also organic aloe vera to moisturise and soften the skin. And the fragrance is created by rNutriganics Face Tonerose, geranium, fennel and orange essential oils. It actually almost has the same clean and organic scent as the facial wash.

The toner is a clear little bit watery substance and is to be applied with a cotton pad on the face. You need to use it after you have already cleansed the face. I would suggest you use a nice cleansing milk instead of the facial wash. Then it will be a perfect combination.

Nutriganics Smoothing Day Cream

The two creams were the items I was actually most curious about. I am 35 years old with starting wrinkles so I fit the target group. My skin is normal to dry. I always prefer a cream that is nutritious and gives me the feeling it is really doing something for my skin. This cream has some interesting ingredients, for example red grape, plantain and elder flower to improve skin tone and texture. For fragrance, essential oils and natural fragrances are used. The cream is in a container with a pomp. That is very handy as it is more hygienic than a pot.

Day Cream CollageThe cream is a white creamy substance that is easy to massage in the skin. One of the first things that I noticed when I applied it was the smell. I do not like this smell! It smells like something artificial. How is that possible with all these nice ingredients? The smell really put me off.  The cream it self is a mild cream. For me it is too mild as it does not comply with my preference of having a cream that really works for you. But if you like a cream that absorbs quickly in to your skin and is not greasy, then this is really your cream. It is suitable for normal to dry skin. I think for very dry skins this is not suitable. Then I would advise the vitamin E cream from The Body Shop.

Nutriganics smoothing Night Cream

The night cream comes in the same kind of container as the day cream but then in a black colour. It also comes with the same interesting ingredients as the day cream.

Nutriganics Night CreamThe cream is a little bit more rich than the day cream and I actually really liked this cream. The scent of this cream is also less annoying as the day cream scent (which for me was really too much). So I really enjoyed using this cream. I had the feeling it was really moisturising and nurturing my skin. So this one is a definite yes to me!

Nutriganics Toiletry Bag

Nutriganics Day and NightA small but handy toiletry bag that is handy to bring with you on holiday. As the bag is see-through you can see the items you have put in. I always prefer toiletry bags like this. I think it will be very handy for you smaller eyeshadows, blushes, mascara etc.

My conclusion

So, my conclusion for this Nutriganics kit. I do not like the foamy face wash, but that is really because I do not like foamy face washes in general. The toner will be great in combination with a cleansing milk (also a personal preference). Unfortunately, the Nutriganics line does not come with a cleansing milk, but it does come with a cleansing gel (no, not my thing :-)) The day cream is also not a winner for me as it is too mild for me and I do not like the smell. The night cream however is very nice and I really liked to use it. The little bag is a winner too.
What I do like about this line is the fact that it contains a lot of organic ingredients and no parabens. For some readers the absence of silicons might also be a pre. For me it does not matter that a product contains silicons. So all together the balance just tips over to the positive side. If The Body Shop would add a cleansing milk and a more rich day cream, I will definitely try more of the Nutriganics line!

A little bit of a yay 🙂

The Nutriganics Kit is sold at The Body Shop and is 20 euros.

Benefit They’re Real Push-Up Liner

I ran in to this eyeliner in the Sephora in Verona this summer. I had never heard about it, but I did know the They Are Real Mascara. A lot of women love the effect of the mascara and I guess there is a good reason why this is one of the best sellers of Benefit. Personally I like the mascara but I am not raving about it. It is okay. But the sales trick, making it a “They Are Real” product, worked on me. Also, I was intrigued by the look of the eyeliner. It definitely looked different than any other eyeliners I had seen. I swatched it on my hand and I liked the fact that it was really black.  Also, the application was very smooth. So I decided to go for it.

The Benefit They’re Real Push-Up Liner promises a lot.

Instructions

I had to read the package before using it.

  • Remove the orange tip protector & discard
  • Twist base until product is delivered – approximately 8 to 10 rotations
  • Wipe away excess liner
  • Click once for enough product to line both eyes.

My experience

Benefit They're Real Push-Up Liner

Benefit They’re Real Push-Up Liner

I removed the orange tip protector and twisted the end many times. Finally I saw the black of the eyeliner coming out and started to apply it to my eyelids. In the beginning it feels kind of odd to apply the eyeliner with the rubber end. But it worked really well. I had to twist the end again to make sure that I had enough eyeliner for both eyes. The liquid is black and it gives a very good definition of the eye. Together with the They Are Real Mascara it gives a very beautiful and dramatic effect.

So my first experience was pretty good. Unfortunately, the next experiences were not so good. The second day I opened the eyeliner nothing came out. Even though I properly closed the lid, the eyeliner had dried out in the tip. I first had to remove the blocking eyeliner. Make sure you do this with something that does not have any fluff on it because the fluff will stick to the tip. I first tried to remove the blockage with a cotton pad, not a good idea! Do not try to remove the blockage with your fingers because the black does not come off easy. After removing the blockage I twisted and twisted and twisted. I cannot remember how many twists it took me to get something out. And for the next step, applying it on your eye, I have another tip: do not wait to long applying it, because it dries out very quickly! So I had to remove the blockage again, and had to twist and twist… Anyway, you get the picture. This same routine I have to do every time I want to use this eyeliner. Frankly, it is too much fuss for me so I have stopped using it. Even though the results are very nice. But I prefer my gel liners who are always happily ready to work.

It is not me. It is you.

Because I was curious to know if I was the only one who was having this problem I started looking for reviews. I was “happy” to learn I was not alone in my experience. I also learned that one of the Beauty Bloggers I checked out was told by Benefit that she should keep the orange protector and place it back in the eyeliner when she was done applying it. Did I miss that on the packaging? No I did not. Also on the website it clearly says, “remove the AccuFlex tip protector & discard”.

Conclusion

To summarize: the results of the They Are Real Push-Liner are really nice. Unfortunately, the quickly drying formula makes it too much fuss to work with. So for me it is a definite NAY.

Availability

The eyeliner is available in the beauty and make-up shops that sell the high-end make-up (in the Netherlands for example Douglas) and the price is 25 Euro.

The best lipgloss ever is…

The best lipgloss ever…. Yes, I’m kicking this blog off with an article about the best lipgloss ever because I want to start with a Big Bang. The best lipgloss ever, in my humble opinion, is the L’Oreal 6h Glam Shine lipgloss. I bought my first version of this lipgloss 5 or 6 years ago in Boots in London. At that time I was a seriously addicted Labello user and I wanted something with more color. The lipgloss was on sale and the colours looked nice so I bought a couple lipglosses. The first time I put the gloss on my lips I immediately noticed the stickiness. That was definitely something to get used to, especially after the smooth Labello.

Now years later I want nothing else. Thanks to the stickiness, which becomes normal rather quickly, I do not need to moisturise my lips every 15 minutes like with Labello. And it makes sure the lips feel nice and moisturised for hours. I will not lie and say it stays on the lips for 6 hours as the package suggests, but it does stay on for a long time. Even better, when the lipgloss has already vanished, your lips will still be moisturised for a couple of hours more. I personally prefer nude colours on my lips (not really a fan of very obvious lips). At the moment I’m using 205 Plum Addiction, which in the package looks darker than it is. The colour is very similar as my own lip colour and I like that as it is perfect for every day use. I also have another nude colour, the 114 Tempting Pink. It is also nice, but I do prefer the 205 Plum Addiction which is less shiny/sparkly. Of course there are also other colours like a more deep red that will suit the red lovers.

2 Gloss Small

In the pictures below you can find the before and after pictures of my lips. As you can see, my lip are rather dry without any lipgloss on. With the lipgloss the lips look moist and also feel like that. As you can see, the 114 Tempting Pink has far more shiny bits in it than the 205 Plum Addiction. Personally I prefer the 205 colour compared to the 114 colour. I think the 114 has too much shine/sparks to it. Nevertheless, it sits in one of my bags as a back-up lipgloss in case needed.

Total Lips

The packaging of the gloss is a plastic container which holds 6ml of gloss and the cap holds the sponge to apply the gloss to your lips. This all works well. What I did notice is that after a while the lipgloss sits inside the cap and after an even longer while sneaks on the outside of the package. Be aware of that when you put it in your bag. It could get a little lipgloss on it if you do not remove the excess gloss from the packaging. I have included a picture below to show what a mess it can become. After taking the pictures for this post, my fingers were covered in gloss. What I also noticed is that when the gloss is almost empty it becomes very difficult to get the last gloss out. The mostly applies to the gloss in the bottom or at the top of the container.

Gloss Smootsh

I just tried to look up the colour selection on the L’Oreal website, but  funny enough they do not advertise these glosses anymore on their site. I have also seen that other websites hardly offer the full range of these glosses anymore. Or do not offer any of these glosses. Furthermore, I could not find it in one of my drugstores anymore :-(. Luckily, others still have it, but only a small selection of the colours. I hope this does not mean that they will remove it from their product range (I am getting really nervous all of sudden).

As you can see I am very enthusiastic about this gloss. I have tried many other glosses as well, mostly more expensive and none of them were as good as this one. Colour wise these other glosse were nice, but I had to reapply the gloss after an hour to make sure my lips stayed moisturised. I also felled that my lips actually got more and more dry after using it. Therefore the L’Oreal Glam Shine 6h is the best lipgloss ever in my opinion. I am curious though what you think is the best lipgloss ever. Also because I have the feeling that this liploss might be removed from the L’Oreal collection.

The lipgloss are available in most drugstores for around 11 Euros.
